Mental Blocks Â
One Of The Most
Insidious Challenges
A Gymnast Will Face
Both performers and coaches fear them. After all, there is so much on the line and so much to lose.
On average, 80% of competitive female gymnasts get a mental block at some stage of their career, and often will get multiple blocks.Â
Â
If you are a gymnast, acrobat, tumbler, trampolinist, diver, cheerleader, ice-skater â or in-fact any acro based sport â then youâll most likely know that debilitating FEAR that is a mental block, that feeling of utter helplessness and vulnerability that sees not only our career but also our confidence come to a grinding halt.
And it is estimated around 80% of all elite female gymnasts will experience at least one major recurring mental block in their career â so it is something that affects every gym.Â
Despite that overwhelming sense of fear that grips us when a mental block hits, itâs important for us to understand that our brain has not turned against us or sold us out. It is actually doing exactly what it has been designed to do and that is protect to us⌠by any means necessary. Itâs our brains visceral reaction to the data we feed it â a bit like an overprotective big brother â and often that data is highly emotive, often negative, and incredibly inconsistent. And so our brains natural reaction to this volatile data is to go into damage control, by switching off our performance blueprint and protecting us from making ourselves feel any worse, or do something silly to hurt ourselves.
So if you are a gymnast, or dealing with a gymnast who is feeling this right now, it is important to understand that all humans are born with only two primal fears:
- Â The fear of loud noises, and
- Â The fear of falling backwards
For most people, once they are up and walking they do not experience the fear of falling backwards. However for gymnasts and the aerial skills we are constantly developing and building upon, are experiencing this daily. So gymnasts are frequently exposed to this primal trigger, and its consequences.
